Cloud Relief (I-III)
Three relief tiles emerge from a single sculpted surface, then divided and reassembled into a fractured rhythm. Flowing between baroque flourish and the drifting forms of Xiangyun, the composition moves between weight and lightness, tension and ease.
On one side, the ornate language of baroque ornamentation unfolds in sweeping gestures, expressive and theatrical, evoking a sense of extravagant excess. On the other, the softened, continuous curves of Chinese cloud motifs carry a quieter symbolism — associated with prosperity, harmony and the rhythm of time. Held together, these opposing sensibilities create a subtle dialogue: one reaching outward in dramatic expression, the other drawing inward towards quiet introspection.
Hand built and carved from a single form before being separated into a triptych, the tiles are intentionally offset within the walnut frame. This slight dissonance disrupts the symmetry of the composition, introducing a quiet unease that sits beneath its elegance. It is within this tension that the piece finds its balance — a reflection on cultural inheritance, where influences are not blended into sameness, but held in conversation.
