About
Objets Obliques is the design practice of Nick Chan, a London-based designer whose work sits at the intersection of sculpture, craft, and functional design. The studio brings together a background in architecture, fashion, and ceramics— disciplines that have informed a precise way of looking at objects, space, and the emotional charge they hold.
Born in Hong Kong and now working from a studio in East London, Nick draws from the tension between two identities — the density and rhythm of one, the clarity and restraint of the other. This duality informs a design language that is dark, brooding, and rooted in brutalist form, yet softened by textures drawn from natural forces. Surfaces rise, fold, or erode; edges drift off-centre; volumes feel grounded but unsettled, as though caught between movement and stillness.
Each piece is hand built in small runs, allowing variations in texture, proportion, and surface to become part of the work. Clay, metal, and found materials are handled with intention, guided by their weight, structure, and natural behaviour.
The studio’s practice extends beyond ceramics into homeware and bespoke commissions. Across all mediums, Objets Obliques focuses on atmosphere — how an object can shift a room, invite reflection, and create a sense of presence through form alone.
